Bir Şehir Kurmak: Ankara

13 Kasım 2019 - 12 Ocak 2020

Ali Cengizkan ve Müge Cengizkan’ın küratörlüğünde, Vehbi Koç Vakfı ve Koç Üniversitesi VEKAM’ın desteğiyle hazırlanan “Bir Şehir Kurmak: Ankara 1923-33” sergisi, Ankara’nın başkent olarak kuruluşunun ilk on yılındaki yapılaşma, modernleşme ve Yenişehir başta olmak üzere kurulum tarihine yakından bakıyor. Bu aynı zamanda “moderne beş kala” barınma kültürüne bakma tarihidir.

Yirminci yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde, savaş yorgunu bir ülkede, eski Ankara / yeni Ankara ikilemi içinde “yeni” bir “şehrin” nasıl kurulduğunu, Cumhuriyetin ilanından 1933 yılına, yani eşzamanlı biçimde Cumhuriyetin onuncu yılına kadar ortaya konan irade ve olgularla birlikte ele alıyor. Günümüze kadar ihmal edilen, kentin ilk yıllardaki planlanışı, mimari projelerin elde edilmesi, 1933 yılına kadar oluşan barınma kültürü ve yapı stoğu açısından irdeleniyor. Yenişehir’in 1923’teki tabula rasa konumundan, 1933 Kızılay’ına nasıl ulaştığı, üç boyutlu kent modellemeleriyle anlatılıyor.

The Construction of a New City: Ankara 1923-1933

Curated by Ali Cengizkan and Müge Cengizkan, under the support of the Vehbi Koç Foundation and Koç University VEKAM, “The Construction of a New City: Ankara 1923-1933” exhibition is examining the first decade of the establishment of Ankara as the capital, with great focus on its modernization and new developments, especially around ‘Yenişehir’. The exhibition also marks the starting history of “the early modern” architecture with corresponding culture.

The exhibition narrates how the “new” city was established, during the first quarter of the twentieth century, from the proclamation of the Republic until 1933, the tenth year of the Republic in a war-torn country under the old Ankara / new Ankara dilemma. In the exhibition, how urban planning was handled for the new-rising city, how architectural projects were commissioned, how dwelling culture was maintained, are revealed in terms of the housing stock until 1933. All the settlement culture being ignored by many till this day, how Yenişehir’s tabula rasa position in 1923 was transformed into Kızılay in 1933 is searched for and revealed by means of the 3D modelling of the Yenişehir district in total. While the pressing demand for “new houses” has been depicted by sharing the experience and impressions of the dwellers of the city, the planned environment dissolves within following social changes and the gaps in historiography are revealed with critical stances.

Three-dimensional architectural and urban models and videos produced within the scope of the research; documentaries and films about the period; snapshots of renown citizens and cabinets of curiosity; all complement and invite the visitors as professionals, researchers and students, as well as ones interested in the making of Ankara to witness the establishment of new a city. Developed as a research project, the exhibition aims to contribute to the modern history of the city. The book with the same title, which articulates and comprehends the scope with related texts and new documents from experts, will be appearing for readers and scholars at the opening of the exhibition.

The exhibition will open on 13 November 2019 and stay open for visitors at CerModern North and South Hangar Galleries for two months until 12 January 2020.
