Zaman bazen bir selin çılgınlığı, bazen de büyük bir nehrin sakinliğiyle geçer, ona en dayanıklı insan etkinliklerinin başında gelir sanat. Birsen Salahi’nin tuvallerindeki kadim figürler de zamanın aşındırıcı ve yok edici etkilerinden sıyrılarak bize ulaşmıştır. Geçmişin izlerini taşıdığı bariz bu figürler acaba bireysel/toplumsal belleğimizi ve insanlığın tarihsel birikimini mi ifade ediyorlar? Geçmiş olanı, hatıraları, tarihselliği bırakmak, aldırmamak mümkün müdür? Yaşam ve birbirinin üstüne basan gerçekler akıp giden sürecin ayrılmaz parçasıdır; geçmişe bir bakmak, zamanın perspektifini atlamamak bugünü anlayıp kavramanın ve geleceğimizi düşlemenin anahtarıdır.

Salahi de çağların, geçmişin çökelti tabakalarından süzdüklerini bir orkestra şefinin şaşmaz becerisi ve kararlılığı ile tuvaline yerleştirir. Çeşitli sınavlardan geçerek bize ulaşan figürler bize keşfin heyecanını ve bunu takip eden mahremlik/yakınlaşma duygusunu yaşatır.

Sanatçının sunduğu öznel estetik duygunun nasıl kucaklayıcı, yürek ısıtan/ışıtan ve zaman ötesi olduğunu duyumsar, bunu da hem sanatçı hem de diğer izleyicilerle paylaşırız. Ortaklaştığımız belki de insana dair olandır, onun için uzak bir zaman/mekândan gelen bu imgeler ta derinlerde, özümüzde çınlayıverir.

B.R. Eyüboğlu’nun en sevdiği öğrencilerinden birisi olarak, onun sıkça dillendirdiği, bu coğrafyanın kalıtı ve esiniyle evrensel olanı yakalama tavrını içselleştirmiştir. Zeytin dalları, bağlar ve üzüm salkımları bu toprakların bereketinin sembolizmini taşır.

Son yaptığı tuvallerden bazıları dünyamızın giderek tükenen kaynaklarına benzemeye başlayan insanlığın en önde gelen (gelmesi gereken) meziyeti olan aşkı/sevgiyi işliyor. Dünya ozanı Shakespeare’i düşünerek yorumladığı sevgi ve nefret epiği Romeo ve Juliet tuvallerinde, dünyamızın son durumunun da bir metaforu ortaya çıkıyor. Nefret ve düşmanlığı taşıma/sürdürmenin her iki tarafın da yok olmasını beslediğini, bunları gömüp sevgi, anlayış ve empatiyi kucaklamanın insanca yaşamanın/barışın anahtarı olduğu gerçeğinin tek çare olduğunu idrak etmek...

Time passes sometimes like a madness of a flood, sometimes like a tranquallity of a great river, and art is one of the human activities that is most resistant to most resistant to the wear and tear of time. The ancient figures on Birsen Salahi's canvases have survived the corrosive and destructive effects of time. Do these figures, which obviously bear traces of the past, represent our individual/social memory and our history? Is it possible to let go of the past, memories, historicity, and ignore all of them? Life and overlapping realities are integral parts of the ongoing process; looking at the past while taking the perspective of time into consideration is the key to understand and comprehend the present and dreaming about the future.

On the canvas, Salahi places her figures that she has filtered from the sedimentary layers of the past with an approach similar to the never failing skill and determination of a conductor. The figures help us experience the excitement of discovery and the subsequent feeling of intimacy/connection after going through various difficulties.

The subjective aesthetic feeling presented by the artist is embracing, warm, shining and timeless. We share this feeling with the artist and other people as well. Perhaps what we have in common is something related to human, which is why these images coming from a distant time/place resonate deep within our essence.

One of the favorite students of B.R. Eyüboğlu, Salahi internalizes Eyüboğlu’s philosophy of capturing what is universal through the legacy and inspiration of this geography, which Eyüboğlu frequently expressed. Olive branches, vineyards and bunches of grapes symbolize the fertility of this land.

Some of her latest works focus on love, which is the foremost virtue of humanity, which is starting to resemble increasingly wasting resources of our world. In her works dealing with Romeo and Juliet, the epic of love and hate story that she interprets Shekaspeare’s legendary work, a strong metaphor for the current state of our world emerges. Realizing that holding/maintaining hatred and hostility feeds the destruction of both sides, but embracing love, mutual understanding and empathy is the key to live humanely with peace..
