Engin Ümer / şeytan çocuk

4-27  Mart March 2021

Her masal güzel sonuçlanmak zorunda değildir.

Devil Child

Tales of today are narrating how we try to destroy ourselves. We are constantly reminding ourselves these stories.

‘Devil child’ is one of the figures that I myself have created for the dreamland for adults. I interpret the word ‘devil’ in two ways; first, ‘insubmissive’ and the second, ‘demonized’. We can conclude that there is ‘activeness in the first while there is ‘passiveness’ in the second. While there is ‘resistance against the ruler’ in the first, there is reification and redefinition in the second.

Child is a part of the social contract, the one who will access the knowledge of the future. Demonizing, objectifying violence causes their loss. As they are destroyed, experience, innocence, and eagerness for knowledge are destroyed as well. Child wants to be involved in the culture as a "haunting image". Not all fairy tales have to end well.

Violence against children, like all acts of violence, is not spontaneous. It has its own legalization. The child that is exposed to violence gains value in a motionless, stable, inhibiting and limiting way. In this exhibition, mothers, fathers and children who do not run, do not walk, do not move and only pose as taking their place in the family theater, in the visual language of today's media, wants to evoke a careless sense of responsibility. Family photographs, coloring books, media representations and fairy tales constitute the visual character of the exhibition. While mothers, fathers, grandfathers, aunts, forest ghosts, the great gin and the devil child are the characters of the fairy tale, the exhibition represents the child in disguise of monstrosity. The tale ends for now.
