Les Grands Portraits de Nadar /
Nadar’s great portraits

The artist, who chose to be known simply as Nadar, is one of the most important portrait photographers of the Second French Empire period. Through his photography, Nadar succeeded in capturing the features of various celebrities, artists, scholars and politicians, such as Delacroix, George Sand, Baudelaire, Victor Hugo and Sarah Bernhardt with an esoteric, psychological finesse.
Nadar’s portraits leave us with an exceptionally vivid impression of his illustrious contemporaries. In each portrait he successfully reveals the subject’s most compelling qualities: Baudelaire with his sharp lines, deep and penetrating glance; Delacroix with his strong, pensive, slightly blurred face; Victor Hugo, looking contemplative and reserved and Lamartine, whom Nadar disliked intensely, is portrayed like a weak, despondent and wizened bird. A photographer’s creation is the product of an enduring collaboration between him/her and the sitter. Nadar, who was very sociable and familiar with all of Paris, knew how to create a favourable environment, imbue his clientele with confidence and pose them in the most appropriate and natural way.
Throughout his career, Nadar was a prominent figure in creating atmosphere. This art, which was his own unique gift, was especially effective when it came to ensuring that his contemporaries could be themselves in front of his lens. As the master of this photographic talent, he succeeded in becoming the most lively commentator of unadorned human reality.
